Founded in 1579 and one of the oldest universities in Europe, Vilnius University has experienced great upheaval over the years due to political events.

After declaring independence from the Soviet Union in 1990, the university was re-established, and the Faculty of Medicine, once renowned for its clinics of therapy, surgery, and obstetrics was modernised with the establishment of the residency and the merging of the faculties of Medicine and Doctor Retraining.

This Vilnius medical university has offered medical studies in English since 2012.

Developing international relationships is a strong focus of the Vilnius University Faculty of Medicine, primarily in cooperation with international organizations such as the World Health Organization, the European Commission and UNESCO. Currently around 22,000 students, including 900 internationals, study at Vilnius University.
