The University La Sapienza (University of Rome) is one of the largest and widely respected universities in Europe. Founded in 1303, the Sapienza University of Rome opened its medical faculty in 1431. The 6-year study program in Medicine and Surgery is offered in both English and Italian, with identical curricula. This Italian medical school educates students at a high academic level to become specialized, responsible and patient-oriented physicians. The largest private university in Europe, the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Rome was founded in 1921 and affiliated with the Catholic Church. The medical School opened in 1961. This Bologna medical school institution dates back to the 11th century, the oldest in the Western world. Originally a law school, The State University of Bologna School of Medicine was added in the 17th century with the teachings of Marcello Malpighi and his anatomic research. Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele is a private Italian university founded in 1996 in Milan. Its medical faculty opened in 1998. The 6-year, English-language program is aimed at international students from within and outside the EU and is known for its research in the areas of cancer, urology and cardiovascular diseases, heart surgery, HIV / AIDS and rare diseases. The 1300-bed hospital allows Milan medical school students to experience a wide range of patients, who travel here for treatment of rare genetic diseases. The University of Pavia and the Faculty of Medicine, founded in 1361, is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Europe. Today, around 24,000 students study at the renowned Pavia medical university, including 1,500 international students. The 6-year study program of Medicine and Surgery is known as “Harvey Medicine” and is specifically aimed at international students. The University of Turin was founded in 1404. The Faculty of Medicine followed in 1436. Many famous researchers and Nobel laureates have studied and researched at this prestigious Turin medical school, such as Salvador Luria, and Renato Dulbecco, having received Nobel Prizes for medicine and psychology. 100 students are admitted each year to this Italian medical program in English, 30 of whom come from outside Europe.
