I’m Lena and I grew up in a small town in Finland and didn’t really leave it my entire life. Studying medicine in Cyprus was the farthest thing from my mind when I was younger. Yet now I’m here, 5 years into my medical studies at the European University of Cyprus in Nicosia and I couldn’t be happier.
Growing up in such a small town I always had the desire to see other countries and experience other cultures. It didn’t seem like that would ever become a reality, especially since I wanted to go to medical school and I thought my dream meant that I’d have to be a student for many years and then work as a doctor with little free time.
As luck would have it, I came across the Overseas Medical Education Network and the pre-med course they offered. Here was the opportunity I’d been waiting for, staring me in the face! I would be able to study medicine and be given the opportunity to see other countries and gain new experiences at the same time.
It took some convincing, but I finally made my family see that this was the right choice for me and registered for the pre-med course. I wasn’t sure whether the claim that the course prepares you for the entrance exams and the first year of medical school was a marketing statement at first. I soon found that the course was indeed really intensive and prepared me to pass the exam with ease.
Why the European University? It has established a great reputation for itself around the world. When some of my friends returned from a trip around Europe, one of the places they couldn’t stop complimenting was Cyprus and how diverse and beautiful it was. Exactly what I was looking for! So, I made my choice and haven’t regretted it for a single second.
